I am Celebrating 25 years as professional photographer by destroying my images

Fireworks in Bergen

1 of May 1989 I drove a red old Skoda from Reykjavik up to the capital of north Iceland, Akureyri. I was starting a new chapter in my life and the day after I was to start working as a press photographer. Its easy to say that this was a life changer. Not only was I heading out to start a new carrier but a year later I had met my wife, mate lots of good friends and soon found my self studying photography in Sweden before moving back to Reykjavik to start my carrier as advertising photographer.

In the time since I started  I have seen a lot of changes. When I was finishing school the digital revolution was starting and I jumped deep into it with lot of philosophical questions about photography. But as time grew and the digital took over I got more and more bored with photography until one day I had the opportunity to turn my life upside down and sacrifice everything in the name of my mistress.

And so I did. Sold every thing I owned and headed out into the world in the expedition truck Benzi in hope to do some photography stuff I really wanted to do all the time. Last but not least I wanted to proof few things to my self regarding my ability to take pictures. In my opinion I did and can be happy with the result of the trip even though it unfortunately did not last as long as I had planed.

On the other hand I have failed miserably in creating some revenue out of the images I made, other then to provide strangers with lot of material for their thieving home pages, where they have stolen my images or others that have managed to gain from advertising on pages where my images have appeared. I on the other hand have gained to little to the degree where I have lost it all.

It was not such a big chance I took I thought as I had secured work in a totally different field when I would be back from the trip. Little did I know that there was a big financial crash around the corner in Iceland that would put a nail in my coffin and close it tightly. That was something I did not count for but the world knows how that went and lot of people have lost every thing because of this. I am not the only one.

If the police in Iceland would not have decided to bathe me in pepper spray I might have gone back to doing some photography, but it took me the better part of three years to get to a level of being somewhat able to work on a computer with full confident again and to see things in the right light. By that time I had lost all confident in me as a photographer beside having moved to Norway and in my age competing with the young guns is not a vise thing to do. I know what I can, but I do not trust my self to deliver the highest of quality the whole time, for that I need perfect eyes and I don’t have them any longer.

When I started out I gave my self a promise that , when I was sure I could not do better to morrow than I did yesterday it would be the right time to quit, and now I am going to do so. I also gave my self a promise that I would only leave behind some things that I would be absolutely proud of and I would not leave behind things that could be developed in in the darkroom or in the lightroom in any other way than I wanted and this I am going to do.

Because of that I will celebrate 25 years as a professional photographer with saying goodbye to photography and destroy most of my images. Thanx for a fun time. Im headding off to  new adventures with in leather and skin at Good Old Company hope to see you there.

p.s If you want any of my images you better hurry. My renewal at Photoshelter runs out on 1 of May and my images evaporate then.
